Lucky Star – I Still Hate Dentists
- In Regards To Sleeping, Maid Cafes and Seiyuu
I felt the urge to watch this episode after yesterdays dose, part of me was excited while another part felt guilty. Is it ok to like this show? What would Motoko say if she saw me with Konata? Wait, thats not going to happen anyway.
Today I realised that I never really watched a slice of life show before. I’m not sure if Lucky Star can be classed as a slice of life show, but for me I defiantly don’t watch it for the comedy and if I wanted moe I would be playing eroge. With that in mind I have become increasingly aware that I like Konata. However I think this is more because of her quirky personality than her animation. She’s not funny, really, but she intrigues me. Her rather low key otaku style life is mirrored by her rather up front personality, she’s not comically in your face but she is abruptly honest. I find her nonchalance to be very appealing and her views on life to be fascinating. Ok maybe that’s over the top, but I can’t help but connect with her lazy attitude and single minded approach to things she enjoys. Oh and she works in a maid cafe, what was the address again?
I’m not sure its worth discussing what goes on in the episode or the jokes, it would just be like explaining my day (I woke up and got on the train, I arrived at work late and made tea. Then I checked my mail and groaned because it was colder than yesterday, possibly I communicated with other human beings at some stage. See? That’s just boring).
Anyway, there were several references to other anime in this episode, notably Haruhi and Shuffle. I’m not sure if I would call this sort of thing fanservice, for me it just adds a layer of believability to the show which makes their discussion feel more relevant. Lots of people are scared of the dentist (I however like the funky gas they give me), many people get an icky feeling at the thought of putting something in their eye. This isn’t high level conversation, you don’t need a 150 IQ to get whats going on but these are conversations most people will have had at some time in their life. I’m not sure if I have a point to make besides the fact that this is real. I’m sure if I had read the original cartoons I may have more insight in to the show and possibly realise that I am talking utter rubbish. But I’m working with what came to mind as I watched the show.
The opening wasn’t particularly interesting, the sisters aren’t amazing for me. There was very little dialogue in this opening sketch and it dragged on a bit, although that’s basically how I am in the mornings, well afternoon. Still, we got to see Konata at the computer, possibly cyborzing. Oh I also like MMO’s, therefore another reason why parts of this show are relevant to me. The whole arcade sequence showed Konata to be quite modest but quietly confident, it’s also nice to see her annoying Kagami. Oh! There wasn’t enough Miyuki in this episode, forget the glasses its her overly complex explanation of situations that creates gold for me. This weeks May sickness was quite good, I think I have that. Back on the subject of dentists for a moment, I’d definitely be there more if they had massage chairs and aromatherapy.
The novel part was interesting, especially as it’s fun to see Konata confuse poor Tsukasa. In my view Manga, and indeed any ‘picture book’, is more a form of art than literature. Although I believe literature can also be known as an art. I would definitely class Great Teacher Onizuka above Harry Potter. I think i’m rambling.
The lucky channel part felt a bit old this week, it was essentialy the same thing again. I’m hoping this won’t be the case next week, if it is, then it’s just a waste of air time. The main thing I was going to write is that this episode wasn’t as good as last week, and it wasn’t, but I enjoyed it and still feel justified in saying there is something to this show beneath the surface.
Next episode, buying drinks from a vending machine.
*Looking back at this made me feel strangely like I was watching a fanatic interpreting a religious text.
