El Cazador de la Bruja – Ellis, Let Me Be With You!

I was actually quite looking forward to this show.

Quite a few people recommend Noir and Madlax, having not seen either of them (yet) I was expecting an enjoyable action packed 25 minutes. Or 5 minutes at least… Sadly this show, for me, was a big let down. Nadi seems to have nil personality, besides perhaps her questionable interest in Ellis. Ah yes Ellis, did she actually do anything in the episode? Oh yes! she made a man drop his gun, well done.

Sorry for the sarcasm but I really found the show lacking in atmosphere, I was just wondering just when it was going to get going. In my view it didn’t. Some of the background art was very nice, but the last time I watched a show just for the background art (Shuffle!) I ended up nearly killing myself. The character designs, while reasonably well animated, were almost jaw dropingly generic. Some of the proportions on the limbs also seemed really off, maybe I am just being picky…

The story involved a female bounty hunter looking for a young girl in order to capture her, dead or alive, for a large reward. However when Nadi actually finds Ellis she seems more interested in protecting her and meeting her ‘grandmother’ than actually claiming any money. This seems to really go against the whole bounty hunter ethos, although without some character background who knows if this was unusual for Nadi or not. Well in the end the pair managed to elude all of the rather amateurish men following them and head South! Ah yes the South, what a lovely place.

I wasn’t really sure where this show was mean’t to be set, or if it was even mean’t to be realistic or not. They seemed to be in a place similar to Mexico, but then most of the people and buildings seemed to be from somewhere else… Oh, the bits where it jumps to a large built up city also felt really awkward. Sticking with locations, I did actually enjoy a few moments when the music fitted in well with the backgrounds (noticeably in the bar) and created some of the only atmosphere that the show had to offer. I wanted to like it, I really did, but there was nothing to sink my teeth in to. The action was boring and rigid at best, the music was slightly better but unsure of exactly what the theme is.

Ah, I did quite like the Ed. The animation and song (Romanesque by FictionJunction YUKKA) were quite sweet, though I am not really sure how the animation was connected to the show. But FictionJunction songs are normally to my liking so it’s cheating a bit.

Overall I can safely say I won’t be blogging this show. I may however watch the next episode just to make sure that it’s not for me. If you really enjoyed the show or think I missed something important, please feel free to comment.
